Southern African Landscapes

The face of Southern Africa is a reflection of its turbulent geological past, as well as a huge range of climatic conditions. Few parts of the world contain such diverse and beautiful natural landscapes as this region where a desert stands in stark contrast to the lush eastern sea-board and the Cape mountains to the south. This diversity of habitats is one of the reasons for the extraordinary profusion of plants, insects and animals found here.

Cloud driven by a gale-force north-westerly wind over the eastern face of Cape Town's Table Mountain, Cape Peninsula, South Africa

Leucadendron microcephalum flowering in snow in winter on the Groenlandberge with the Hottentots Hollands Mountains beyond under cloud, South Africa

Late evening sun behind storm clouds outlining Camelthorn, Acacia erioloba, trees in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Northern Cape, South Africa

Early morning light illuminating a heavy deposit of droplets on grasses, the pink stemmed grass Diheteropogon filifolius, and Festuca costata after overnight soft rain in early summer in the Lotheni River valley in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg, South Africa

Baobab trees, Adansonia digitata, without leaves in winter and silhouetted against the dawn along the Luvuvhu River near Pafuri in the northern Kruger National Park, Limpopo, South Africa
